I’ve been keen to see the Italian part of Switzerland, so when a friend mentioned we could get $20 round-trip tickets to Ticino we had to go. Here’s how to get the tickets and what the train rides from Zurich to Locarno and back were like.

Nice views from the train! Nice views from the train!

There are 1,111 reduced-priced fares from Zurich or Lucerne to Locarno, a pretty Italian-Swiss town on a lake, available every month. They’re about $40 full-priced, but because we have a half-off discount for public transportation it was only $20.

The website to buy tickets is here.

The train leaves from Zurich HB and you can go straight to Locarno with no switches if you pick the right one. The tickets are good to hop on and off all day, so if you want you can go to any stop on the line, get off, get back on, and continue onwards.

Free coffee! Free coffee!

It is a three hour ride each way. That’s pretty long, but it’s relaxing and the views are very nice. Plus, you get a free coffee with your ticket, which you can redeem at the coffee machine on board.

The last train we could take back leaves around 7:30. We enhanced our train riding experience by buying beer and wine at a convenience store before boarding.

Ready for my ride back to Zurich. Ready for my ride back to Zurich.

We had many nice adventures on our day trip to Locarno, which you can read about in other posts. We will definitely be coming back!
