The Wisconsin Capitol building in Madison stands out as a particularly stunning example of civic architecture, right in the middle of town.

Those who visit the city are in luck because there are multiple free hour-long tours a day!

Sev and I went to one at noon and had a great time admiring the art work (including multiple giant badger heads) and learning a bit about the building’s history and how the state government works.

Beginning the Tour

You don’t have to sign in or register or anything to join a tour, just show up to the central desk a few minutes before one of the tour start times, and mill around until it starts.

The Tour

I haven’t been to a lot of state capitol buildings, but Wisconsin’s must be one of the finest. This building was completed in 1917, after a fire destroyed the original.

The tour took us through multiple rooms where state government actions take place, including the office of the governor, legislative chambers, and the state supreme court.

Rooms usually featured paintings depicting the founding of the state and important moments in Wisconsin’s history.

The tour ends with an opportunity to go to a little history exhibit on the top of the building, and take a walk on an outer balcony where visitors can view the whole city.

Conclusion

This is a really nice activity to familiarize yourself with Madison and Wisconsin government and history. Plus it’s free! We think it’s a must-do for visitors to the state capital.
