I'm not exactly sure how this happened, but on Tuesday my right eyelid started to become swollen and uncomfortable. Perhaps it was from the day before when we went snorkeling with turtles in Akumal. I thought it might go away on its own, but by Thursday I woke up with it swollen shut entirely.

Concerned it might be an infection, I consulted an online doctor from the States, who strongly recommended I see someone in person in Mexico. This is a bit of a problem as 1) I didn't buy health insurance for this trip and 2) I really didn't want to go through a lot of hassle. I needed something like urgent care, where I could see a doctor quickly and without insurance.

Farmacia del Ahorro came through. Along with COVID tests, this pharmacy offers free consultations with a doctor, who will write a prescription right there that you can fill at the pharmacy. For me it was absolutely the perfect option.

I asked the pharmacy technician if I could see a doctor, and she told me (in Spanish) to go to the back of the building and up the stairs, handing me a note that indicated I needed a doctor consultation. Upstairs was the COVID testing site and the doctor's office. I could see him right away.

I described my symptoms to the doctor, who spoke English, and after flashing a light in my eye I came away with a prescription for steroid eye drops and antibiotics, which I have to use for five days. To my tremendous relief, after just one day the swelling was almost entirely gone and I felt great, although I can't drink alcohol for five days because of how it mixes with the medication. Perhaps the consultation was a bit less personal and thorough than an American would be used to, but I didn't mind much and was happy to come away with medication I knew would probably work.

Huge thanks to Sev for providing an abundance of hot and cold compresses and telling me I was still cute. And huge thanks to Farmacia del Ahorro for its quick, easy, and cheap (free) service, which I definitely recommend to fellow travelers for urgent-care needs.
