Sev and I were wandering around looking for breakfast and stumbled upon Frutipicos. I was a bit wary at first as it was located right next to the main tourist attraction, the plaza mayor. I thought maybe this meant it would be high-priced and low quality. But I was completely wrong.

Changua Changua

I ordered Changua, and although I could more or less understand what the ingredients were based on the menu, I was surprised to get what looked like a fried egg stew. There were multiple fried eggs that sat at the top of the bowl, interspersed with chunks of bread and cilantro. It was totally unexpected and not something I would normally order.

I didn’t love it because I ate it slowly and the bread got really soggy. But when we came back I ordered something else, which came with the egg stew as a side dish. This time I liked it a lot more because it wasn’t as big and I could finish it before the bread got soggy and cold.

The restaurant itself had an interesting layout of tables being really close to each other. It was decorated with dried vegetables and herbs hanging from the ceilings, and although it was dim inside it made the bright blue sky against the surrounding hills you could see from the windows all the more pretty.

When it came time for the bill, we almost couldn’t believe that it was about $7 for both of us. This was an excellent meal, which included coffee, and was very filling. And it was right next to the plaza mayor! If you’re touring Villa de Leyva this is a no-brainer for breakfast.

The ambiance sounds super nice! (Plus what a great meal cost for 2 people)
