Chilling at Chillon Castle
9 Jan 2023 by Amby
We arrived in Montreux from the Goldenpass Express around 12:30pm and after a short walk on the lake front we took a ten minute bus ride to Chillon Castle. This is one of Switzerland’s more famous castles, so I was happy it was actually open in winter, unlike a lot of other castles in the country. It was awesome!
Entrance was 13.50CHF per person. The castle is quite big and you’re left to your own devices to explore. The exhibit signs are in French, English, and German, so we had no problems understanding everything.
Exhibits focused on the castle’s long history—originally the site was a Roman outpost, but references of the castle date to as early as 1005AD! It was expanded in the 1200s and put to various uses through the 1700s.
Exhibits also discussed the restoration of the castle, which was just as fascinating. Chillon is one of the best preserved medieval castles in Europe, so it was very cool to hear how that came to be.
It was cold:
We went in early January and it was really cold. Except for a small cafe and shop none of the rooms are heated and I was only wearing a rain jacket, not prepared for how cold it was. Nevertheless we saw every room, taking 2 hours to go through everything.
The cold might have been a blessing, though, as we were practically the only people there and had lots of time and space for photoshoots! If I knew ahead of time I would’ve worn a better coat though.
Overall:
Easily five snacks. The price was very good, the views of the lake from the castle were amazing, there was a lot to do and see, and getting there is very easy by bus. We only spent the afternoon in Montreux and I’m so glad we did this!
