The Zug Kuntshaus is unique for a couple reasons. 1) It has the most prominent collection of works from Viennese Modernism outside of Austria, and 2) It doesn’t have a permanent exhibit, instead creating newly curated exhibitions every few months.

I stopped by during their “In the Mood for Colour” exhibition, running from May 6-September 10, 2023. All told, I was very impressed with the museum and delighted by the friendly staff.

One of the color labs. One of the color labs.

Entrance:

The museum is in a lovely part of town and has a beautiful exterior with nice sculptures and trees. It set a good mood as I approached.

Entrance is 15 CHF, but I had the Swiss museum pass so it was ‘free.’

Free entrance is also granted on exhibition opening days.

There's a neat roof garden out front but it was closed when I went. There's a neat roof garden out front but it was closed when I went.

The Exhibition:

In the Mood for Colour was arranged with each room focused on artworks in specific colors. There was a ‘red’ room, ‘yellow’ room, ‘black’ room, etc.

I was given and English-language guide book, which was very well written and provided excellent context for the art on display.

Discussions include how pigments are used together to create a color, how the color can make a viewer feel, and why artists might choose to work with this color over others.

The yellow room. The yellow room.

In two different places there were “labs” where visitors could experiment with colors and see for themselves how colors can combine in different ways to make an artistic expression.

Another 'lab.' I didn't partake but it looks cool. Another 'lab.' I didn't partake but it looks cool.

I really didn’t think I would like this exhibition as much as I did, because it seemed at the same time too basic and too abstract. But I found it very educational and I enjoyed contemplating the colors separately in the way the exhibition designed.

The red room. The red room.

Nice Staffer:

In the green room there was a German tour going on with a lot of people sitting around two paintings.

The paintings were beautiful, particularly the "Gartenlandschaft mit Bergkuppe" by Gustav Klimt, and I really wanted a closer look but didn’t want to interrupt the tour.

One of the museum staff approached me and, sensing I didn’t speak German, told me I should go up to the painting and not mind the tour.

I got a little closer but she approached me again and said I could literally go right next to it, which I then did. This was so thoughtful and I appreciate this attention to guest experience!

Me and the stunning Gustav Klimt work "Gartenlandschaft mit Bergkuppe," 1916. Me and the stunning Gustav Klimt work "Gartenlandschaft mit Bergkuppe," 1916.

Conclusion:

If all of their exhibits are this good, the museum is worth checking out during a day trip to Zug.
