Hohenklingen Castle overlooks the small old town of Stein am Rhein. Built in the 1100s, today it’s privately owned and hosts a restaurant. Between the hike, castle grounds, and fantastic food, this is a must-do activity in Stein am Rhein.

Nice views from the tower. Nice views from the tower.

The Walk Up:

The one possible problem with Hohenklingen is there is no public transportation to the castle. The only way to get there is by private car or by taking a 30 minute hike up from the city center.

Bry and I decided to walk up. The path is well-marked and also had steps. The path leads through vineyards and a little forest, and the views of the city along the way are very nice.

The hike is not physically difficult but we were tired out by the time we got to the top! There are also no lights along the way so be prepared to use your phone’s flashlight if it’s dark outside.

See the castle way up on the hill? See the castle way up on the hill?

The Castle:

We were surprised we could just walk in the castle—no one was at the door, there were no employees anywhere at all. There were some signs explaining the castle history and different rooms but unfortunately for me they were all in German.

Just casually walking into the castle. Just casually walking into the castle.

We climbed the castle tower just in time for the golden hour where the whole town glowed in the sunset. Was a great spot to take photos!

Cannonball! Cannonball!

The Food:

The restaurant is up the stairs of the castle, and is decorated nicely. The food was surprisingly reasonably priced and the staff helped me find an outlet to charge my phone in a separate room.

I got the white wine soup for just 13CHF while Bry got the lentil soup for 19CHF. We both really liked our choices! I never had white wine soup before but apparently it’s a local specialty. You could taste the wine flavor but it was not alcoholic.

The Walk Down:

It was dark and raining a little by the time we left. The waitress told us the only way down was to walk or call a taxi. We decided to walk down the path we came up, and it was slippery and cold and dark but we made it thanks to our phone flashlights. Not sure I would recommend this but it was a memorable experience to say the least!

The path down. The path down.

Overall:

The grounds, views, and food are totally worth the 30 minute walk up and down. Make sure to give Hohenklingen Castle a visit when you're in Stein am Rhein!
