Georgetown Canal Tour

I lived in Georgetown for about a year and a half and love this historic neighborhood. The canal opened for history tours for the first time in a decade while I was up, so I had to get tickets!

The tour is conveniently located off of M street and it was easy to find the boat. The people running the tour are wearing 19th century attire and the boat looks very nice.

The tour begins by going through a canal lock. Water fills the lock and lifts the boat about 15 feet, which was pretty cool.

The history aspect of the tour was a bit boring for us and focused more on random anecdotes than facts. I didn’t really learn that much about what goods were shipped through the canal or when it was operating. But I did hear a few poems and speeches about the canal from over the centuries.
Georgetown is a lovely neighborhood though so it’s nice to take a slow ride through and look at all the pretty buildings and scenery.

The tour was about an hour long. I would say it’s worth $20 but maybe you should also read the Wikipedia article about the canal if you really want to learn what it’s all about.
