Hobbitenango

While we were in Antigua all our friends were raving about the Lord of the Rings-esque theme park known as Hobbitenango. Sev and I recently had a conversation about how much he liked Hobbits because of their chill lifestyle so I thought this would be an amazing opportunity to live this dream. Now, I'm not saying we were disappointed, but let's just say it was an interesting, unforgettable experience.
So we take a taxi to the entrance of Hobbitenango and it's about 20 minutes from Antigua city center. No problem. Cost like $5. At the ticket counter you have an option to take a car up a steep hill, or you could walk up yourself. Sev and I are all about the subir life, and wanted to train for our upcoming volcano hike, so we took the walk. It was pretty steep. I was pretty tired but survived. It was nice having the road to ourselves though except for a few cars, and the views of the mountain countryside were cool. The tickets to go in were about $6 USD.
So Hobbitenango itself looks pretty cool. But it's small, and there aren't loads of things to do beyond looking at things and taking pictures. We went up around 3pm and it closed at 6pm and we had plenty of time to see and do everything. Plus when we were there it was extremely foggy. On the one hand, it looked magical, on the other hand, a major attraction is looking at the scenery on top of the mountain and that simply wasn't an option.
There are some hobbit houses around and a place for sitting in hammocks, there's also this neat giant hand over a cliff where you can take pics. There is one restaurant where we got a pizza and some drinks. It wasn't that expensive, about $12 for a pizza to share.
All in all it's a cute little side trip, but if you have limited time in Antigua might not be worth it. Certainly you do not need more than 2-3 hours though, probably 1.5 if you're feeling rushed. And check the weather beforehand! You'll definitely have a better time and get better pics if it's not foggy.
