KrippenWelt Nativity Scene Museum

The medieval part of Stein am Rhein is very small, so KrippenWelt immediately stood out because it has a lot of high ratings on Google and because it was one of the few attractions open in the old town.
I really enjoyed this museum as something rather unusual and would recommend it to my readers with five snacks. Plus, it’s in the oldest building in Stein am Rhein—built in 1302!
The ground floor of the museum is a cute little cafe and shop where you can buy Christmas ornaments, nativity scenes, and tickets to the museum (10CHF). The museum itself is up the stairs and occupies two floors of the building.
The exhibits feature nativity scenes from around the world. There are aver 1,500 nativity scenes. It was extremely cool to see how different cultures represented the birth of Christ, including by incorporating local architecture and animals to the scene.
We spent about an hour carefully walking through. There weren’t any signs explaining things but most nativity scenes were labelled with country and sometimes a date. I’ve included more pictures from the museum at the end of this article.
We wanted to grab a coffee and cake at the cafe as well but it was very busy and only one person was working so we decided to leave, which was fine—there are plenty of cafes in Stein am Rhein.
The museum’s shop had really cute Christmas decorations which tempted me greatly. If Christmas hadn’t just passed I might’ve picked one up.
Definitely worth stopping by!
