Regular readers might notice I like to save money by booking cheaper hotels, but this generally comes with a proportional decline in quality—sometimes reasonably tolerable like the U.S. Pacific Hotel in NYC, and sometimes truly regrettable like the Urban Boutique Hotel in Vienna.

I am both pleased and surprised at the quality of our stay at Villa Ioli, located right on one of the lovely Lefkada beaches.

Getting There

Sev and I took a four-hour bus ride from Athens to downtown Lefkada, where we then walked for a about forty minutes to Villa Ioli.

I didn’t really enjoy this walk with my carry-on bag in the blazing Greek sun but we stopped by one of the many mini markets along the way and I bought an ice cream and Lefkada travel guide.

Likely we could’ve tried to get a taxi or other transfer but we didn’t bother. The next day we walked back into town and rented a moped from Lefkas on Wheels for 18 EUR a day, cutting our ride into town to six minutes.

Checking In

Villa Ioli proprietor Kostas greeted us when we arrived and gave us our key card, which we also needed to use to run the electricity in the room.

Kostas was at the reception desk every morning, and was always available by phone if we needed anything, although we never did.

The Room

The third-story room was simple but clean and had everything we needed for a good stay—towels, soap, hangers, and basic utensils for heating up food and water. We also had a mini fridge.

If you’re looking to do actual cooking at your hotel this is not a good option, but we made our own coffee every day no problem and ate out the rest of the time.

One of the nicest parts of the room was the balcony, where Sev and I would sometimes sit to work. It had a fantastic view of the Ionian Sea, an awning from the sun, and a nice regular breeze.

The WiFi was strong and we had no problems working there or taking video calls.

The shower had good pressure and temperature, although I didn’t like how you have to hold the shower head. I think that’s just Greek style though because that’s how the shower in our Athens hotel was too.

We were especially happy our room was cleaned every day, and the lady who did it always did a great job.

Location

The location was very good, just across the street from a beach with sapphire water to swim and chill. There were also a lot of bars and restaurants to check out just a few minutes walk away.

About ten minutes of walking will bring you to the iconic 18th-century Lefkada windmills, which were fun to visit.

The town is about a six-minute walk via car or moped, and the drive there along the waterfront is very pretty. We went to town at least once and sometimes two or three times a day for lunch, dinner, and other activities.

Overall

We thought Villa Ioli was a great value and provided a nice working- and living- base while we relaxed and saw what the rest of the island had to offer. We spent nearly two weeks here and had 0 problems.

We would definitely recommend this accommodation to our readers!
