Lucha libre, a popular form of wrestling in Mexico where opponents often wear masks, was recommended to me by several friends as a must-do while we're here. Guadalajara has a lucha libre arena in town, just a 20 minute walk from our Airbnb by Plaza Reforma.

It's the easiest thing in the world to get tickets to lucha libre, so keep that in mind if you find package deals for tourists that offer tickets, transportation, and free drinks.  The show starts on Tuesdays at 8:30, so we just strolled over to Arena Coliseo around 6 pm and bought tickets at the box office for 300 pesos, or about $15 USD, each. Then we went to a nearby bar to kill some time.

Around 8 we went back to the Arena and there was a bit of a line to get in as everyone had to be sprayed with disinfectant. But this wasn't that bad. Inside they had fresh popcorn for 20 pesos and beer for 35 pesos—you really can't get better deals than that! I got a popcorn and a beer.

There's an attendant available to help you find your seat. Then the show begins!

There were four rounds of wrestling, each about a half hour long. The plotlines aren't terribly complicated so you can follow along even if your Spanish skills are extremely poor. Attendants come around with more snacks and beer for purchase. Overall I found it quite fun and enjoyed watching the interesting wrestling acrobatics and also the infectious enthusiasm of the fans, both young and old.

Sev however was less impressed, and didn't like how loud the yelling from the audience was, along with the contrived plotlines and clearly staged moves. So, lucha libre is not for everyone and that's alright! If loud noises aren't your thing either, it's very easy to leave after the first or second show if you just want to see it for a short time. Personally, I liked it, and I would probably go again.
