Sev and I spent the morning in Lenzburg, a small city in the Swiss canton of Aargau, and visited Schloss Lenzburg, a small medieval castle on top of a hill. The origin of the foundation of this castle is unknown, but a fort existed at the site in the 1100s and it was built to its current extent by the Habsburgs in 1340.

On your way to the entrance you will find a playground filled with six or seven wooden child-sized buildings. A cat was relaxing on a bench in this area and we gave it many pets.

Entrance to the castle is $15, and there is a convenient parking space a short walk away that cost only about $1 for an hour.

I was really impressed with how well-maintained the grounds were. The gardens were very pretty and there were many nice points to view the surrounding countryside.

The exhibits inside the building were very well curated and interactive without being annoying. The English translations were perfect and I learned a lot about the Habsburgs! It was also interesting to go inside the medieval jail and see the old graffiti from prisoners carved into the walls.

The castle seems to go out of its way to be very child-friendly. There was a dress-up area and a few other activities for kids to play.

We spent about an hour here and saw basically everything we wanted to see, although if you like taking your time at museums or have kids you could probably spend two or more hours reading everything and doing all the activities.

Overall it was a really nice and inexpensive history lesson and aesthetic adventure. If you’re in Lenzburg, check it out!
