Milan Archaeological Museum

There are a ton of museums and exhibits to see in Milan. Unfortunately for us, however, this was a last minute trip over Easter weekend—everything was packed and some museums were even closed.
But! The Milan Archaeological Museum was open, cheap (5EUR), and not very crowded. We thought we’d give it a shot, and ended up quite enjoying this quirky museum packed with interesting artifacts.
The museum is located on top of defensive walls built around the city towards the end of the 3rd century. These can still be seen in the basement exhibit, along with examples of Roman dress and mosaics from the same time period.
I loved how they preserved this history and incorporated it into the museum itself. In the museum courtyard is another artifact from Milan’s Roman history—a 24-sided polygonal tower also used for defense.
We could go inside and tower and admire the 13th-century Christian frescoes painted on its walls, after the tower and surrounding area became incorporated into a monastery.
The next part of the museum showed more history of the area and other nearby ancient civilizations. There were Egyptian, Roman, Greek, and Etruscan artifacts on the different floors.
Sev and I sometimes found the organization of this part of the museum a bit confusing but it’s always neat to see artifacts and learn new things about history.
Overall this wouldn’t necessarily be my first choice for a museum in Milan, but it’s in a nice, walkable location and has a lot of interesting exhibits. If the crowds at the more famous museums overwhelm you, why not have a relaxing stroll here for a very reasonable price?
