Mole Poblano: The Famous Mexican Dish!
26 Jun 2021 by Amby
We took a day trip to Puebla and I got to try one of my favorite meals so far in my six months of traveling Latin America: mole poblano. Mole is a famous kind of Mexican sauce—there are a variety of mole, but mole poblano is a thick, spicey, and chocolatey version native to Puebla.
We went to Augurio, right in the center of town within easy walking distance of a lot of tourist attractions like Catedral de Puebla and the Biblioteca Palafoxiana. Augurio has a small dining room but is nicely appointed and quite cozy. It seems like it would be more expensive than it actually is—my tamal de pato con mole was $70 pesos, or about $3.50 USD. I also got a cappuccino and a nice crunchy pastry.
I was wildly impressed with my food, the mole was a wonderful combination of spicy, savory, and sweet. It's definitely a must-try if you happen to be in Puebla. Everything at Augurio was great, except, as often happens in Latin American restaurants, waiters can take a long time to bring the bill. This could be perfectly fine if you want to chill, but we had one day in Puebla and a lot of things to do. So if you drop by, make sure to catch the waiter early to get the check.
