Sev is a big fan of cats, so when we heard about the Winterthur (which the locals call Winti) Naturmuseum’s special exhibit on house cats, we had to go. While the cat section was interesting, we were impressed with how nice the exhibits are curated throughout the museum. The cat exhibit is up until October 23, 2022, but at $6 entrance, we definitely recommend this museum any time of the year.

The one unfortunate thing (for me) is that all of the signs were in German, so without Sev, knowing what was going on would have been a struggle. However, everything was set up so nice you can basically get the idea anyway.

The cat exhibit was cool and had a lot of interactive parts and different ways of presenting the information. I learned that cats can’t see the color red. They had several stuffed cats and other animals which we were not allowed to pet.

The rest of the museum had a lot more animal taxidermy. While taxidermy is a little sad because the animals died, it was really well done and interesting to get up so close to different animals. The birds were particularly cool because you could see their colorful plumage in detail.

Downstairs there was a focus on geology, fossils, and Swiss animals. I loved how the fossils were real and not casts, you could see way more detail and it’s always more exciting to interact with the real fossil than a reproduction. A lot of the fossils came from the local area too.

Especially cool was this 18th-century boat reproduction. The room was slightly tilted and felt like it was moving, there was also realistic creaking noises; I actually felt a little bit sea sick on it somehow. On the “boat” there were crates with various objects that Swiss merchants might have traded across the world.

After that we saw some scaled-down versions of the alps and some of the famous Swiss mountain goats.

The museum seemed very child-friendly and there was an entire room for activities with children, which we didn’t go in but looked fun.

We spent about an hour and a half in the museum and had a great time! Five snacks for sure.

The museum looked very nice from the outside too. The museum looked very nice from the outside too.
