HR Giger, an artist who created the design concepts for the Alien movies, is somewhat of a Swiss treasure. He was born in Chur and spent some of his professional life and retirement years in Gruyères.

He set up a museum of his work in Gruyeres and also designed a nearby, Alien-themed pub. Sev and I dropped by after touring the local tower to see something totally different.

Entrance was 12.50CHF but there are various discounts/ticket packages you can buy at the cash register with the other big attractions in town, like the Tibet museum, the castle, and the cheese factory.

The museum is pretty big, covering multiple stories. Giger’s art is futuristic, dark, and disturbing. He worked in many different mediums, and while I think he lacked technical mastery in painting, his talent really shown in his world-famous sculptures.

I enjoyed the creativity of the art and the thematic interweaving of biology and machines. I wasn’t a huge fan of the grotesque sexual imagery though, and for that reason this museum is definitely not one to take kids or other sensitive people to.

There is also a few rooms dedicated to other artists and curiosities, including Albert Hoffman’s drawing of the LSD molecule, which he discovered and experimented with himself.

Across the street is an Alien-themed bar, and we quickly walked in and walked out as you weren’t allowed to take pictures unless you bought something. The bar looked extremely cool, and had all the elements of the museum that I liked with none of the weird alien sex stuff.

Sev also wasn’t a huge fan of the museum’s artwork, so we’re both giving this museum 2.5 snacks. I would say if you wanted to get the alien vibe the bar is a great place to hang out instead. Interestingly, there’s another Giger-designed alien bar in Chur!
