Red Light District Hostel

On our way to Munich Sev pulled up the reviews for Pension am Hauptbahnhof, which I hadn’t really paid attention to when I booked it over a month ago. Needless to say some people really didn’t like staying here, claiming rooms were dirty and it was in a sketchy loud neighborhood.
To my relief, that was only partially true. The rooms were actually very clean and comfortable. The building was completely safe. The location was central. But our window was right across the street from two strip clubs on a loud and chaotic street. So that was a little unfortunate.
I originally booked this place because it was really cheap (100 Euro/night) for the location and time (late May) and I just wanted something basic and convenient. And that it was—Pension am Hauptbahnhof is 5 minutes away from the main station and 15 minutes walk to the Old Town.
The room had a shower and sink but no toilet and weirdly you had to use the key to unlock to door from the inside. The couch was a little dingy but I thought everything was clean and the bed was especially comfortable.
Employees were all super nice and the breakfast looked great, although I didn’t have any.
The main problem started around midnight and lasted until 6am: yelling, screaming, glass-breaking, singing, and siren-ringing happening on the street below the window. This was somewhat mitigated by closing the windows but the street chaos still woke both of us up. I suspect you wouldn’t have this problem in the rooms not facing the street though.
I don’t know, this was really not a great experience, but I appreciate the hostel having so much security and otherwise being nice and highly affordable. If you end up at Pension am Hauptbahnhof just make sure to bring your ear plugs.
