My mom and I really like The Sound of Music, which is based in Salzburg. So I was excited to see some of the sights from the movie. There’s a huge Sound of Music tourism industry in the city, which of course includes a bike tour to many of the iconic film locations.

Sev has never seen the movie and has no interest in it but he still had fun, because the town and surrounding area is so lovely.

Fraulein Maria’s Biking Tour takes three and a half hours, from 9:30am to 1pm—an action-packed morning for a reasonable 42 EUR. To be clear, you aren't biking for 3.5 hours straight. There are plenty of opportunities to stop, take pictures, and snack.

We started off at the Mirabell Garten and got our bikes, which were high quality and suited us well throughout the journey. About 12 people were on the tour total.

Tour guide Celeste explained different aspects of the sites in terms of how the film was shot, where the actors were, and the life of the real Maria Von Trapp that the movie is based on.

Some cool spots we saw in the Old Town were the cemetery, the music hall (we didn’t go inside though), and the abbey where the real and movie Maria started religious training before joining the Von Trapps.

The movie modelled the graveyard scene on this Old Town cemetery. The movie modelled the graveyard scene on this Old Town cemetery.

Then we went out of the city to the surrounding countryside to see the houses used as the Von Trapp residence in the film (different houses were used for the front and back), and the famous gazebo where they sing “I Am Sixteen, Going on Seventeen.”

The famous gazebo! The famous gazebo!

Celeste also had a speaker, playing Sound of Music songs while we biked in the countryside; a really nice touch.

The bike ride was seriously no problem, and I was a bit worried because I am not a strong biker. I feel as though anyone can do this ride.

It did start raining about half way but it wasn't bad and we all managed to trudge through it just fine. The rain cleared up in a few minutes. There's a basket on the bike so you can bring a rain jacket just in case!

The 'back' of the Von Trapp house in the movie. Also the lake from the scene where they fell off their rowboat! The 'back' of the Von Trapp house in the movie. Also the lake from the scene where they fell off their rowboat!

If you like the film I think a tour like this is a must-do because it would be really taxing to visit all these spaces on your own, and it’s fun to hear the inside stories and context to these sites. Sev and I agree—five snacks!
