Staying at the Governor’s Mansion
7 Aug 2023 by Amby
Sev and I were in Madison and wanted a cute hotel in a good location to see the city highlights by foot.
We were very pleased with the hisotirc Governors Mansion Inn, which was built in 1856 from locally-quarried sandstone and was home to 17 Wisconsin governors between 1885-1950.
While the room was a bit small, especially with two beds, we enjoyed the historic vibe, the breakfast, and the balcony with views of Lake Mendota.
Getting There
We had rented a car so it was no problem traveling to the Inn, which is centrally located.
There was free parking for guests but we arrived too soon before check-in so we parked at a lot nearby for a couple hours and got lunch downtown.
Check In
This property offered self check-in, we got a code for the outside door and for our room, we had no problems with this at all.
The Room and Building
The room was a little small but it felt cozy and comfortable, everything was clean and the bathroom was spacious.
We really liked the door to the balcony, where I spent some time working remotely.
Our room was the only one (of 9) on the ground floor, and was fully ADA accessible. Interestingly, The room housed PhD students from 1950-2012.
The dining and lounging areas were large and nicely appointed.
The free breakfast of scones, biscuits, and fruit was okay. Not fine dining but a reasonable way to start the day.
Overall
A really fun and relaxing place to stay. The price was reasonable given the other expensive options for the location, which couldn’t be beat. We would certainly recommend Governors Mansion Inn.
