I took an 11 hour flight from New York City to hang out with Sev in Switzerland. I took Air Serbia and so had a two hour layover in Belgrade, at Nikola Tesla Airport. During the flight I got to experience some interesting, Tesla-inspired airplane food.

Yum Yum

Nikola Tesla is a famous inventor of Serbian origin. His name and face appear on the Air Serbia plane, in the airport, and also on the menu.

I’ve had some extremely bad experiences with low-quality meat in the past so try to avoid it when I can, including on airplanes. However, they were all out of the vegetarian option so I went for the beef.

I ate it all (except for the stale dinner roll) because I was extremely hungry after my seven hour layover in New York City, but the entree was not good. The meat was really salty and just tasted bad. The salad was very sad and I don’t really like olives but ate them anyway, perhaps out of boredom.

I actually didn’t hate the cake with vanilla sauce for dessert though. That was okay. And I did get two glasses of wine to go with the food, which helped make the entire plane ride more bearable.

This blog post mostly serves as a plea to airlines: if you can’t make a quality meat dish, can’t you just save the money you would spend on meat and offer better vegetarian options? Surely customers can go one meal on a plane without eating meat if it means the vegetarian meal they do have is edible and enjoyable.

Also, according to Google, Nikola Tesla was a vegetarian in his later life, so that is extra incentive for Air Serbia to try a little bit harder on vegetarian options.
