Valentin-Karlstadt Museum: Munich Comedy Icons
20 May 2023 by Amby
During the Hop-On Hop-Off bus ride we learned about a few of the different museums in Munich, including one that had a “winter toothpick,” wrapped in fur so your hands wouldn’t get cold.
Obviously we had to see it ourselves, and we charmed by this quirky museum housed within the Isartor, one of the medieval gates to the city. This is a great way to escape the city crowds and learn about something new!
The museum is only 3 EUR, and is dedicated to Munich comedic partners Karl Valentin and Liesel Karlstadt, who were active in the early 1900s.
It’s mostly in German but English speakers can use the QR codes on certain exhibits to hear English explanations. I don’t really like using my phone so much in museums but the English guides were informative.
Some of the jokes the pair used were on display and still pretty funny. Along with the winter toothpick, there was an “old hat,” and the coat a janitor was wearing when he met his wife.
It was an interesting to think about how different mediums like film, song, and objects were being developed to convey humor during this time. The strong non-romantic friendship between Valentin and Karlstadt was also very intriguing!
At the top of the first museum tower is a really cute and cozy cafe. It had all kinds of random things for decoration and we loved the vibe. We just got coffee (3 EUR) but they also had snacks.
Even if you don’t speak German and don’t much care for the museum, I think it’s worth the entrance fee alone just to chill at this cafe in the medieval tower. Five snacks!
